Kindergarten Courses – K2 Math – The Journey of Biscuits (Learning Geometries)

  1. Initial understanding of common geometric figures: circle, triangle, square, sector, trapezoid;
  2. Know the main characteristics of common geometric figures and be able to name the figures;
  3. Stimulate children’s interest in understanding geometric figures.

Activity goal

Highlights of activities

Key points: Recognize common geometric figures: circle, triangle, square, sector, trapezoid;

Difficulty: Know the main characteristics of common geometric figures and be able to name the figures.

Activity process

  1. Scenario introduction

The little animals live in a primitive forest and rarely come into contact with new things. Until a railway passed here, the little train would regularly deliver some special gifts, so the little animals looked forward to the arrival of the train. Today, with the whistling of the whistle, the little train was loaded with exquisite gift boxes, bang, bang, bang, bang… The little train was getting closer and closer, and the little animals were so nervous. Children, guess what gift the little train brought to the little animals today?

  1. Understand geometric figures

(Invite several children to “pick up” the gifts and open them to see what’s inside.)

Inside are biscuits of various shapes, which the little animals like. However, there is a condition for receiving the gift, and you need to answer what shape the cookie is.

The little animals don’t know what the shapes of cookies are called, what should they do? Are the children willing to help them?

Round

Features: This is a round biscuit, fat and cute. Children, think about it, what are the characteristics of a circle? Can children make circles with their little hands?

Real objects: Can children find any objects in the classroom or in life that are round?

In nature, the sun, earth, and moon are all round. Among the foods that people eat, moon cakes, glutinous rice balls, meatballs, and grapes are round. There are rings and earrings in jewelry, balls in toys are round, and many other items are round.

Triangle

Features: The shape obtained by connecting three line segments is called a triangle. A triangle has three sides and three angles.

Real objects: Can children think of any objects that are triangular?

Triangle ruler, some traffic signs, tripods, small buntings, sandwiches, roofs of some houses, bicycle racks, musical instrument triangles…

Square

Features: Squares are divided into squares and rectangles. The four sides of a square are the same length and the four corners are the same size. The two opposite sides of a rectangle are the same length and the four corners are the same size.

Square objects: handkerchiefs, floor tiles, chessboards, photo frames, square grids, ceilings, Rubik’s cubes, square tables, square stools, square watches, square sticky notes…

Rectangular objects: doors, windows, beds, tables, stools, sofas, shoe boxes, refrigerators, televisions, computers, books, notebooks, calendars…

Sector

Characteristics: A sector is a part of a circle, consisting of two straight lines starting from a point, and an arc connecting the two straight lines. It’s like a round birthday cake. After cutting it, each piece becomes a fan shape.

Real objects: folding fans, fan-shaped plates, ginkgo leaves, scallops, peacocks in full bloom, cakes…

Trapezoid

Characteristics: It has four sides, four corners, and only one set of opposite sides is parallel.

Physical objects: stairs, river dams, embankments, spatulas, sides of football goals, car windshields, handbags, lampshade planes…

  1. Expand your understanding of other graphics

Circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, sectors, and trapezoids have a common name, which is called geometric figures. Besides these, what other shapes of cookies are there? Can the children name them?

There are also parallelograms, rhombuses, hexagons, and isosceles trapezoids, which are also geometric figures. There are also biscuits in the shapes of hearts, four-leaf clovers, crosses, flowers, five-pointed stars, eggs, crescents, leaves, crowns, and snowflakes.

  1. Give gifts to small animals

With the help of the children, the little animals can finally receive their favorite gifts. They are ready and waiting for the children to give them gifts.

Now ask the children to find small animals from the tool box and line up the small animals first.

There are some shapes on the plate in front of the little animals, which are the shapes of cookies that the little animals like. Ask the children to put the corresponding cookie gift boxes on the plate. Only the cookie shapes that the little animals like can be dragged into the plate.

Summarization

(Geometrically shaped cookies to find friends game, guide children to name the shapes and deepen their memory. Example:)

The round biscuit is looking for its good friend, can the children help it?

It turns out that round biscuits and trapezoidal biscuits are good friends. They took a train from afar and came to Bunny’s house. Circles and trapezoids are geometric shapes that Bunny likes…
